New Anime Blu-ray UK Releases (28/05/12)

After a short period without any new Anime Blu-ray Releases in the UK, the past month (and upcoming months) are going to be rather busy - since last week Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society Blu-ray was released and upcoming next month is Angel Beats and Broken Blade on Blu-ray.

Return to the present and we find that Manga Entertainment UK, in partnership with Kaze UK, has today released the first three Bleach Movies on Single Blu-ray discs across Britain.

I've seen the first two films on Blu-ray, from Kaze-Fr, so i expect the quality and menus to be exactly the same (since the versions by Kaze-Fr had English Dub Track and English Subtitles). Both films had superb picture quality and 5.1 Surround Tracks. Either way today all three films are available to purchase from UK Stores and online retailers.

Bleach: The Movie - Memories Of Nobody -> £15 (Amazon UK / HMV UK) £17.99 (Play UK)
Bleach: The Movie - Diamond Dust Rebellion -> £15 (Amazon UK / HMV UK) £17.99 (Play UK)
Bleach: The Movie - Fade To Black -> £15 (Amazon UK) £17.99 (Play UK) £20 (HMV UK)

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (30/01/12)

This week's first Anime Blu-ray Release of the year is none-other than Samurai Girls, which is being brought to us in the UK by both Manga Entertainment UK and Kaze UK.

I believe (correct me if i am wrong) KAZE UK are funding the Disc's while Manga UK are distributing it within the UK, a similar story of whats going to happen with the upcoming Bleach and Naruto Blu-rays.

The Samurai Girls Collection Blu-ray is a 2 Disc Set which features all 12 Episodes from the series. The harem comedy-action series is set in an alternate Japan where the Tokugawa shogunate never lost its power and all hell breaks loose when two people start fighting for this power.

Samurai Girls: Complete Collection -> £32.99 (Amazon UK / HMV UK / Play UK)

Plot: The story takes place in Japan in the early 21st century, in an alternate reality where the Tokugawa Shogunate has remained in power. In this reality, student councils are tasked with oppressing schools. Yagyuu Muneakira is a high school student who rebels against his student council with the help of girls who've had the names of famous samurai heroes passed on to them.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (21/11/11)

This week's Anime Blu-ray release in the UK is none other than the epic conclusion to Eden Of The East with the second feature-length movie Eden of The East: Paradise Lost which is being brought to us in the UK via Manga Entertainment UK and is available on both high definition Blu-ray or standard definition DVD.

Paradise Lost continues where The King Of Eden left off with Saki and her friends in trouble with the law after suspicion arises that they are terrorists, its now up to Saki and Takizawa to unravel the truth behind the Selecao as well as outmaneuver the other players in the game, making this one of the most plot-twisting and intriguing anime of this year.

If you have not seen Eden Of The East TV Series, let alone Eden Of The East: The King Of Eden then this second movie will make no sense and would be rather pointless in watching it, however if you are interested then i'd highly recomend watching the TV Series from the begining as this anime has a ton of surprises in store for you.

Eden Of The East: Paradise Lost -> £14.99 (Amazon UK / HMV UK / Play UK)

Plot: The story of political and subversive intrigue in the series finally reaches endgame. Even as the law enforcement net tightens around Saki and her fellow Eden of the East associates over alleged terrorist activities, the complex web surrounding the mysterious Mr. Outside is finally untangled as the remaining Selecao attempt to outmaneuver one another. Takizawa's memories and identity are also finally revealed including his association with a former Prime Minister and his request to be the King of Eden.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (14/11/11)

This week's Anime Blu-ray release in the UK is none other than the futuristic racing film REDLINE, which, in terms of the japanese timeline, has been released after seven years in the making.

REDLINE in the UK is being released into the UK via Manga Entertainment UK and will be available in two different versions. You can either purchase the standard Blu-ray, which only contains the film with special features, or you can purchase the Special Collectors Edition which not only includes a Blu-ray and DVD Version of the film but it also contains a feature book explaining about the film and its history.

REDLINE to some may look like a marmite film, you either love it or hate it - however after watching the film you will notice that its got something in it for everyone. Its got Women, Aliens, Extreme Hairstyles, The Army, Exploding Planets, Mecha, Fast Cars, Gangsters, Bribes, Awesome Music, Swearing, Violence, some laughs and lots of Nitro - so there surely is something for everyone. The film is basically one crazy, but lots of fun, adrenaline fueld fun and its definately worth a watch.

The Film also includes both Japanese & English Audio, both of which have been done extremely well in Dolby Digital TrueHD Surround, so the experience, to put it blunt, out of this world and REDLINE is definately a film worth watching in High Definition as standard defintion, for this film, won't cut it due to the amount of detail and background events going off.

Standard -> £15.93 (Amazon UK / HMV UK) £15.99 (Play UK)
Collectors Edition -> £17.47 (Amazon UK) £17.49 (Play UK) £17.99 (HMV UK)

Plot: The most dangerous and exciting car race in the universe is held only once every five years. And that's tonight. The competitors are lined up at the starting block. In his vehicle, JP, the most daredevil driver on the circuit, is ready for the green light. Female driver Sonoshee, with whom he is secretly in love, is also on the starting line. She will stop at nothing to get on to that podium. In this race, not only is anything possible, but also anything is allowed.

The film is produced by the studio Madhouse (Ninja Scroll, Summer Wars), directed by Takeshi Koike (The Animatrix's "World Record") and written by Katsuhito Ishii (Piroppo, Trava).

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (10/10/11)

This week's Anime Blu-ray release is Freedom - Collectors Edition, which is being brought to us in the UK by Manga Entertainment UK.

Originally Freedom was licensed by Beez Entertainment in the UK and a very discreet Blu-ray boxset was released for a relatively high price, well now that Manga Entertainment UK own's the license they have re-released the set at half the cost.

Unlike previous Blu-ray releases this particular set contains not only the Blu-ray but it also contains the DVD Version of this particular series, making it the first Double Play edition of a TV Series released by Manga Entertainment UK

The Blu-ray contains the complete series (all 7 episodes) and its special features, which last up to an hour themselves, as well as two DVDs (one contains the series, the other contains the special features) - additionally four postcards inpsired by the film are also included in this Collectors Edition.

Freedom: Collectors Edition > £24.99 (Amazon UK / Play UK) £25.99 (HMV UK)

Plot: In the year 2041, mankind created their first space colony on the moon. But after a freak cataclysm devastated human civilisation on Earth, the republic of the moon built a domed megalopolis known as Eden. New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (26/09/11)

This week's, or should i say this month's, Anime Blu-ray release in the UK is none other than Fumihiko Soris's To that is being released under the title of 2001 Nights by Manga Entertainment UK.

2001 Nights contains two different types of episodes, one of them being a Japanese CGI Movie, while the other is an OVA Movie, both of which have been adapted from two stories in Yukinobu Hoshino's 2001 Nights Manga franchise. The two stories were originally called "Symbiotic Planet" and " Elliptical Orbit" and are part of Hosino's long storyline about mankind's voyages into space.

2001 Nights (also known as TO for the American Release) is a perfect example of two different animation styles being used to tell one combined story, in a sense giving a similar experience to what Dead Space: Downfall, The Animatrix & Halo Legends did with each story being told by a different artist or animation style.

2001 Nights (aka TO) -> £15.99 (Amazon UK / HMV UK / Play UK)

Plot: Join the acclaimed director, Fumihiko Sori (Vexille, Ichi) and the producers of Appleseed and Halo Legends for an epic journey to the stars told across two stunning sci-fi fables.

A crew returns home after 15 years in space. While they have only aged by two years, everyone they know is now fifteen years older.

One hundred years have passed and mankind presses on ever deeper into the solar system. But far from establishing a new world order in space, man has brought the same old rivalries and conflicts with him. A war erupts as the race to colonize a new Earth intensifies.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (29/8/11)

This week's special "Bank Holiday" release is High school Of The Dead (H.O.T.D for short) and is being brought to us in the UK on Blu-ray by Manga Entertainment UK.

To most people High School Of The Dead might be a love or hate anime, as the anime itself is filled with senseless violence and Nudity.

The First half of the series shows us the High school students running away from a zombie epedemic as well as killing anything that attacks them and then later in the second half of the series it turns out to be a bit of fan-service with partial nudity.

High School Of The Dead looks like its going to be a mixed bunch, with violence, blood and nudity all in one box - but its all in good fun.

This Blu-ray release is the complete 13 Episode series over 2 Blu-ray disc's, and is also available to purchase on standard DVD, however High School of The Dead was originally made & broadcast in High Definition so it is definately worth watching in HD.

High School Of The Dead Collection -> £24.99 (Amazon UK / HMV UK / Play UK)

Plot: A deadly new disease is ravaging the world, turning the populace into mindless zombies, and the number of infected is skyrocketing by the second. As their fellow classmates and teachers succumb to the infection around them, a small group of students at Fujimi High School are fighting for their lives after surviving the initial outbreak. It is up to Takashi Komuro to unite the group of weary survivors and try to escape the horrors that surround them. In this new world of the living dead...will they escape?...

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (25/7/11)

This week see's the world's first English Release of "Yu-Gi-Oh! Bonds Beyond Time" in the UK and it is being brought to us in the UK by Manga Entertainment UK.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Bonds Beyond Time is the film that celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading card game & brings all 3 Main Characters from past Yu-Gi-Oh! TV Series into 1 feature length film - which results in 1 final duel to save the world (and more).

The English release has been dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment, which have previously done all other Yu-Gi-Oh! Movies & TV Series - so all original voice actors should still be here.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Bonds Beyond Time Blu-ray features 3 (if not 4) Different versions of the film, as this Blu-ray includes the FULL stereoscopic 3D Version (which requries a 3DTV, 3D Glasses & a 3D Compatible Blu-ray player) - but it also includes the standard 2D Version. Not only that it includes the original Japanese Version & the English Extended Version - which had an additional 10 minutes of animation added to the original film.

The Film may only be short (at 1 Hour) but it can be watched several times over just to see all the different versions. But it is certain that this film will mainly appeal to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Fans, such as myself.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Bondes Beyond Time -> £9.99 (AMAZON UK / HMV UK / PLAY UK)

Plot: After falling through a time-slip, Yusei Fudo (who has just had his powerful card stolen by a mysterious stranger) meets with Judai Yuki and Yugi Muto, who agree to help Yusei defeat the evil Paradox, who is planning to destroy Pegasus before he can invent Duel Monsters.

For the first time ever, all three Yu Gi Oh heroes are united for their first adventure together. Comes with an exclusive limited edition Super Rare "Malefic Red-Eyes B. Dragon" Yu Gi Oh collectable trading card.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (18/7/11)

After a week break of releasing awesome Anime titles, Manga Entertainment UK is back in full force with another awesome Blu-ray release and this time its Aniplex's and Studio Bone's"Xam'D - Lost Memories".

As you may have noticed the packaging design is extremely similar to that of the USA version released a few months back - and Manga Entertainment UK will be releasing it in the same format, i.e. 2 Boxsets, both containing 2 Discs with 13 Episodes - making a total of 26 Episodes over 2 Blu-ray boxsets, known as Collection 1 and Collection 2.

Well This week its only Collection 1 that is getting released, Collection 2 should be released in a few months time and like all of Manga Entertainment's Release's you will also be able to buy it on DVD as well as Blu-ray.

XAM'D - Lost Memories: Collection 1 -> £25.99 (AMAZON UK / HMV UK / PLAY UK)

Plot: Enter Sentan, a lush, tranquil island encased in war between the military and those with Hiruko, known as X'amd. On one of these warlike days, Akiyuki Takehara heads off to school and gets caught in a raid by the creatures. Through a series of events he is transformed into a X'amd, and with the help of a Tessikan woman Nakiami along with his highschool friend Haru, Akiyuki is forced to learn to live with the Hiruko or faces the danger of losing his self-control and turn to stone.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Casshern Sins Part 2 was also scheduled for release on Blu-ray today, however only the DVD Version of it has been made available, this has led me to believe that Manga Entertainment UK have decided not to release Part 2 on Blu-ray due to the high production costs of Blu-ray media, as well as poor sales of the previous volume - this is similar to what happened to the rest of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Blu-rays.

I Personally dislike this idea, as i prefer to have the complete collection on 1 format (or both if its a combi-pack) - plus watching it in HD first, then SD (Standard Definition) takes some of the experience away - but the moral is, if you want more Anime on Blu-ray from Manga Entertainment (or even continuing series on Blu-ray) then you must purchase the Blu-ray itself as soon as possible, espically if its a title you want.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (4/7/11)

This week see’s Manga Entertainment UK release another Blu-ray and for the third time in arrow its another feature length film, this time being “Musashi: The Dream Of The Last Samurai” and for me this release seems to have come under the radar, probably due to the previous big blu-ray releases of “Akira” and “Evangelion 2.22” but mainly because its an anime title I’ve never heard of before until a few days ago.

Manga Entertainment UK are the first people to bring the movie outside of the Japanese area, hence why I’ve not really heard of it before, however it’s a film conceived and scripted by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost In The Shell, The Sky Cralwers) and directed by Oshii’s frequent collaborator Mizuho (Toshihiko) Neshkoro - who also worked on Ghost In The Shell. The Animation studio is Production I.G. - who, yet again, have also worked on both Ghost In The Shell Films, So the film has all the talent needed to make it a great anime hit in the UK - which im sure samurai fans will also enjoy.

Musashi: The Dream Of The Last Samurai will also be available on DVD, however it’s the Blu-ray that’s getting all the attention here.

Standard Blu-ray -> £15.99 (AMAZON UK / HMV UK) £17.99 (PLAY UK)

Plot: Miyamoto Musashi is an instantly familiar name to any Japanese citizen, a legendary swordsman who has become part historical figure and part romanticised hero of myth. In addition to writing one of the key texts on Japanese samurai tactics and philosophy - The Book of Five Rings - he is also famous for inventing the Ni-Ten Ichi Ryu style of fighting with two swords, perhaps the most obvious, internationally recognized visual trademark of the samurai.

But even with so much academic study dedicated to Musashi's life, so many books written on him and an almost infinite number of movies, anime and manga stories inspired by his legendary exploits and teachings, still questions remain unanswered. Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai attempts to answer one of these in particular - what motivated the great warrior to adopt and perfect his dual bladed style?

New Anime Blu-ray UK Release (27/6/11)

This week sees Manga Entertainment UK release another Blu-ray and this time its the long awaited High Definition re-master of AKIRA - which some would say its the release every anime fan has been waiting for.

To Celebrate MangaUK have decided to release the Blu-ray in a variety of different formats, first off there is a standard DVD, secondly there is a standard Blu-ray and last but not least is a Worldwide Exclusive Steelbook Edition which according to MangaUK is only available in very limited quantities.

This release has not only been re-mastered in High Definition but it also features the newer "english" audio track (the 2001 version), as previously seen (or heard) on previous DVD releases & last saturday on SyFyHD where Akira HD had its first UK TV Premire debut.

This super limited Collector's Edition pack comes with the new remastered edition of Akira on Blu-ray, beautifully restored in full high definition, with an incredible True HD soundtrack, plus the Akira feature DVD disc along with a specially produced 40-page booklet exclusive to the UK and packaged inside a gorgeous steelbook case.

Standard Blu-ray -> £17.93 (Amazon UK), £17.99 (Play UK / HMV UK)
Steelbook Blu-ray -> £17.93 (Amazon UK), £17.99 (Play UK / HMV UK)

Plot: A landmark film that introduced much of the Western world to modern anime, AKIRA is a marvel of modern animation. Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's 2,000 page manga, AKIRA begins on July 16, 1988, when what was believed to be an atomic bomb was dropped on Tokyo, completely destroying the city and marking the beginning of WWIII.

Thirty-one years later, Neo-Tokyo has sprung from the ruins of the old city and is experiencing a prolonged period of civil unrest caused by student uprisings, political instability, and, most destructively, biker gangs. One of the members of these biker gangs, Tetsuo, is detained by the military after a near accident with a strange young boy.

After recognising innate psychic ability in him, the military begins using Tetsuo as a test subject to channel Akira, a source of unimaginable power and the cause of the explosion that destroyed the original Tokyo. However, the military's plan backfires, and instead of locating the source of Akira's power, Tetsuo becomes a medium for it.

Endowed with incredible psychic powers that make every one of his destructive impulses a reality, Tetsuo begins to go on a rampage that threatens to completely annihilate Neo Tokyo. Combining a complex science-fiction universe with intricately detailed animation and phantasmagoric images, AKIRA is a stunning visual experience and a disturbing vision of the future.

Whilest on the other hand we have a Blu-Ray Release of "Laputa: Castle In The Sky" an Anime Film by Studio Ghibli and brought to us in the UK by Optimum. Laptuta: Castle In The Sky also comes bundled with the DVD version of the film.

In terms of which to get first its definately up to you, but if you want something abit dark, slightly violent and with some action then id go for Casshern Sins - however if you want an enjoyable story about a girl and her friend looking for a floating castle then you should go for Laputa:Castle In The Sky, but as i said before both are worth watching.

Casshern Sins: Part 1 -> £28.97 (Amazon UK), £29.99 (Play UK / HMV UK)
Laputa: Castle In The Sky -> £15.93 (Amazon UK), £15.99 (Play UK), £16.99 (HMV UK)

Plot: Casshern Sins - Part 1:Ruin is the salvation of man and machine!

Casshern: Sins is a millennial update of a beloved 1970s classic of Japanese animation, which saw a lone cyborg hero opposing a robot empire that threatened to overthrow the Earth. This darker reimagining mixes frantic action with heartfelt humanity, as Casshern fights to survive a bleak dystopian future - little realising that he caused the end of the world!

Plot: Laputa - Castle In The Sky: Is an imaginative tale full of mystery and adventure. The high-flying journey begins when Pazu, an engineer's apprentice, finds a young girl, Sheeta, floating down from the sky, wearing a glowing pendant.

New Anime Blu-ray UK Releases (18/4/11)

This week see's the UK release of the "Eureka Seven - The Movie" (aka Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers) brought to us on DVD & Blu-Ray by Manga Entertainment UK.

Unlike most anime films, you do not need to watch the TV Series to understand the film, as this film is a stand-alone unit - which means even if you havent watched the Anime "Eureka Seven" (which in my opinion seems abit slow at times) you can still enjoy the feature length film without feeling lost or confused.

If you watched the TV Series and then the film (like i did) then you will notice alot of differences which makes the whole story confusing (untill at the very end when it all comes together) - so i say its best to watch both the film & TV Series at different times to really enjoy the story of each as they are both really good, but i prefer the film more as not only does it contain fast paced action - but it also contains the drama & story which heavily featured in the TV Series.

Yet again Eureka Seven - The Movie is best enjoyed in High Definition as the crisp video quality & superb surround sound makes it an enjoyable experience.

Eureka Seven: The Movie - £14.93 (Amazon UK), £14.99 (Play / HMV UK)

Plot: Renton, son of scientists, and Eureka, a girl who can't live under the sun, are raised together when very young and become very attached to each other. One day, Eureka is taken away. Powerless at the time, Renton vows to rescue her. He enters the military and is soon assigned to the Independent Youths Unit 303 of the First Mobile Forces thanks to his exceptional performance alongside his Nirvash, a bio-mechanical armor/control system. Unknown to Renton, lies a plot to extinguish the alien invasion that is currently happening. It involves not only him, but Eureka too.

New Anime Blu-Ray UK Releases (28/3/11)

This week see's the release of the 2009 Japanese Box-Office Sensation "Summer Wars" - which is being brought to us on DVD and Blu-ray via Manga Entertainment UK.

Both DVD & Blu-ray versions are being released as "stand-alone" units (i.e. Summer Wars on its own) or you can purhcase the "Double Pack" which features Summer Wars as well as another anime masterpiece "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" film all in one box and at a very "competitive price".

As it stands if you want "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" on Blu-ray you must buy the Summer Wars Combi-pack as the Girl Who Leapt Through Time will not be released as a stand-alone blu-ray until later on in the year, and even then it will still retail for around £14.99 - so if your planning on picking up Summer Wars, you might as well get the Combi Pack.

Summer Wars -> £12.85 (Zavvi UK) £12.93 (Amazon UK) £12.99 (HMV UK/Play UK)

Summer Wars & The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Combi Pack) -> £17.85 (Zavvi UK) £17.93 (Amazon UK) £17.99 (HMV UK/Play UK)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: When 17-year-old Makoto Konno gains the ability to, quite literally, "leap" backwards through time, she immediately sets about improving her grades and preventing personal mishaps. However, she soon realises that changing the past isn't as simple as it seems, and eventually, will have to rely on her new powers to shape the future of herself and her friends.

Summer Wars: When timid eleventh-grader and math genius Kenji Koiso is asked by older student and secret crush Natsuki to come with her to her family's Nagano home for a summer job, he agrees without hesitation. Natsuki's family, the Jinnouchi clan, dates back to the Muromachi era, and they've all come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of the spunky matriarch of the family, Sakae. That's when Kenji discovers his "summer job" is to pretend to be Natsuki's fiancé and dance with her at the birthday celebration. As Kenji attempts to keep up with Natsuki's act around her family, he receives a strange math problem on his cell phone which, being a math genius, he can't resist solving. As it turns out, the solution to the mysterious equation causes a hijacking of the social networking site through which most of the world's social and business traffic flows. It's up to Kenji and his new fake family to put reality back in order.

New UK Anime Blu-Ray Releases (24/1/11)

Aswell as reporting which imported anime Blu-rays work in the UK, i'll also be making posts when new Anime related Blu-rays are released in the UK - as new titles do tend to slip past un-noticed.

Based on EA's best-selling 'Dead Space' games! Unlock the secrets behind the action horror series with this two disc movie collection! The secrets of the Dead Space universe are laid bare across two discs of alien terror!

Dead Space: Dead Space is a feature length horror/sci-fi animated movie based on the much anticipated Electronic Arts video game set for release in the fall of 2008. When a deep space mining operation discovers a mysterious alien Marker, some believe they have finally found evidence of our creators. However, the removal of the Marker instead unleashes a horrific alien species, which had been entombed within a remote planet, and a desperate fight for survival ensues. The story follows a select group of miners and crew members, as they confront a grotesque and lethal invasion unlike anything ever seen before. The Dead Space animation will serve as a prequel to the game, and take adult animated horror to a whole new level.

Dead Space 2: Aftermath: The year is 2509 and not only has Earth lost contact with the Ishimura and Isaac Clarke, but now also the USG O'Bannon, the first responder ship sent to rescue them. Four crew members of the O'Bannon have survived. But what happened to the rest of the crew? What were they doing? What secrets are they keeping? All to be revealed... in the Aftermath!
Dead Space: Aftermath is a fast paced, horrifying thrill ride told through the perspective of the 4 survivors by several renowned international directors. Each vision unique and bold in its own way. Voiced by an excellent cast led by Christopher Judge (Stargate: SG-1), Peter Woodward (Babylon 5, Charmed), Ricardo Chavira and Gwendoline Yeo.
